Could the Ft. Lauderdale Airport shooter have any connection to Islamic jihadis?
JUST IN: Suspected Gunman Told FBI He Was Being Forced To Fight For ISIS
According to Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca, Esteban-Ruiz was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a gun that he checked in. “He claimed his bag and took the gun from baggage and went into the bathroom to load it. Came out shooting people in baggage claim,” LaMarca said.
Law enforcement said he was found with an active military ID and is an American citizen, born in New Jersey. Previous known addresses include Penuelas, Puerto Rico and Anchorage, Alaska.
They add that in November 2016, he walked into an FBI office in Anchorage claiming that he was being forced to fight for ISIS. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital.
UPDATE: Fort Lauderdale Airport shooter lived within walking distance of the ONLY mosque in Alaska.
NBC(h/t Susan K)A spokeswoman for the Alaska National Guard confirmed to NBC News that Esteban Santiago joined the Puerto Rico National Guard on Dec. 14, 2007, and was deployed to Iraq from April 23, 2010 to Feb. 19, 2011.
He was then in the Army Reserves before joining the Alaska Army National Guard on Nov. 21, 2014. He received a general discharge from the Alaska Army National Guard on Aug. 16, 2016, for unsatisfactory performance, the spokeswoman said.
His girlfriend in Alaska gave birth to a baby (below) in September.
The below photo allegedly of Esteban Santiago, wearing what possibly could be a keffiyeh, a scarf often worn by Palesitnian Arabs, has appeared on Twitter. Some unconfirmed reports say it is believed he posted on a forum for downloading Islamic jihadi videos in 2007.
